Bringing Our Pastures to Your Table: The Legacy of Brangus Cattle

For three generations, our family has been dedicated to ranching, nurturing the land, and raising exceptional Brangus cattle. This journey, spanning decades, tells a story of commitment to quality, innovation, and the timeless values of hard work and respect for nature.

The Legacy of Three Generations

Our ranching legacy began with belief in sustainable farming practices long before it became a buzzword, understanding that the health of their cattle was intrinsically tied to the health of the environment. Taking care of cattle requires dedication and hard work, which often means waking up early and staying up late. But rewards of a healthy and thriving herd make it all worth it. Today, the third generation continues this legacy, blending time-honored traditions with modern advancements to produce some of the finest Brangus cattle in the region.

The Brangus Breed

Brangus cattle are a crossbreed of Brahman and Angus, combining the best traits of both breeds. The Brahman contributes resilience and heat tolerance, making Brangus cattle particularly suited to warmer climates. The Angus lineage, on the other hand, is renowned for superior meat quality, characterized by marbling, tenderness, and rich flavor. This hybrid breed embodies the perfect balance of hardiness and high-quality beef production.

Difference in Meat Quality

When it comes to meat quality, Brangus cattle stand out for several reasons:

  1. Marbling: The intramuscular fat, known as marbling, is abundant in Brangus beef, which enhances flavor and juiciness.

  2. Tenderness: The genetic traits of Angus cattle ensure that the meat is tender, making for a delightful eating experience.

  3. Flavor: The combination of Brahman and Angus genetics results in a beef that is rich and robust in flavor, offering a unique taste that stands apart in the market.

  4. Consistency: Our meticulous breeding and feeding practices ensure that every cut of Brangus beef is consistently high in quality, providing our customers with a reliable product every time.

The Benefits of Grass-Fed Beef

Why Grass-Fed Beef is Better

Grass-fed beef has gained popularity among health-conscious consumers for several reasons. Firstly, cattle that are grass-fed enjoy a more natural diet, which can lead to meat that is richer in certain nutrients. Grass-fed beef tends to have higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known for their heart health benefits. These fats are essential for maintaining a healthy heart and can help reduce inflammation in the body.

Moreover, grass-fed beef is often leaner, containing less total fat than its grain-fed counterparts. This can be an important consideration for those looking to reduce their saturated fat intake. Additionally, grass-fed beef typically contains more antioxidants, including vitamins A and E, which can support overall health and immune function.

The Health Benefits of Antibiotic-Free Beef

Choosing beef that is free from antibiotics is an important step towards maintaining personal and public health. Antibiotics are often used in conventional beef production to promote growth and prevent disease in confined animal populations. However, this practice can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which is a significant public health concern.

By opting for beef without antibiotics, consumers can help reduce the spread of these resistant bacteria. Additionally, antibiotic-free beef ensures that the meat consumed is free from potential antibiotic residues, which some consumers prefer to avoid for personal health reasons.

FAQ:

Does this price include the butchering and processing cost?

Yes, we will take the live animal to the facility and deliver it to you when processing is complete.

Butchering fees are typically $1,000 per animal.

When should I expect my beef after I placed the deposit?

We typically have one to five steers at butchering weight at a time. We dry hang the cattle at the processer for 14 days (or what the butcher suggests for the individual steer). When your deposit is placed, we contact the facility within the business day to schedule your butchering. The availability could be as soon as a week or as long as a month, but we will keep you updated along the way!

What does Hang weight mean?

Live weight is the steers full weight before any processing has been done. The hanging weight is the Steers weight after removing non-edible parts, including the horns, hoofs, hide and is about 65% of the live weight and typically ranges from 500-600 lbs.

How much meat should I expect to take home?

After processing, you can expect about 65% of the hanging weight as usable meat. After it is butchered into final cuts, your take home weight will be about 375 lbs. You will receive a mix of steaks, roasts, ground beef, and specialty cuts. A standard whole cow yields:

  • 25-30% steaks (e.g., ribeye, tenderloin, sirloin)

  • 30-35% roasts and larger cuts (e.g., chuck roast, rump roast)

  • 30-40% ground beef and stew meat

One of the biggest benefits of buying a whole cow is the ability to customize your cuts. you will receive a “cut sheet,” this is a guide that outlines the available options for processing the cow. You can pick the thickness of your steaks based on your cooking preferences. Decide how large you want your roasts and determine how much of the cow you’d like processed into ground beef versus whole cuts. Not shown on your cut sheet is the marrow and meaty bones, we automatically add this to every whole/half order.

When do I make the final payment?

When the meat is delivered or you pick it up. You can make the payment through our website via an invoice you will be sent, or cash/check. If you plan on using a check, please make it payable to Hurst livestock with memo reading whole beef final payment.

If I pick up my beef for your property, how many coolers will I need?

We recommend using five 120-quart coolers to transport a whole cow. This should fit in bed of your truck, though you might need some additional space in the cab. For home storage, keep mind that you can expect about 25 pounds of meat per cubic foot, so you'll want at least 16 cubic feet of freezer space at home. The meat will come in boxes of like parts weighing about 40lbs each, if the drive isn't too long (an hour or less) and you have in-cab space, you will not need coolers.

Can I go in on a half with a friend and receive full cow pricing?

Yes! If you and a friend or neighbor want to go in together, we will honor full cow pricing. We can split sides A and B into completely customizable halves.

The only additional fee this will incur is $75.00 per half to have the processing plant split the cow into separate boxes and cuts to order.
